The Plot

The Plot for the first 15 episodes is complicated.  But in its simplest form, the story follows the kidnapping of Ditch and the disappearance of Connee who is last seen leaving the '701 Club' with Alan Starr.

As the prime suspect, Alan Starr temporarily evades the police and becomes a local legend.  While "on the run" he is befriended by multiple-personality Billy Milligan as well as a group of local survivalists, but is eventually lured down a secret passage into the catacombs beneath the city streets and captured by a member of Neighborhood Watch.   Fingerprinted and incarcerated, Alan Starr stands trial and, on circumstantial evidence, is found guilty of 17 counts of kidnapping and one count of "cold blooded murder."  He is sentenced to the electric Billy Milligan Posterchair.

It is during the final two-hour, feature-length Episode 15: Sleight of Hand, that Alan escapes from the Athens County Jail on Halloween night and disappears into a partying crowd of thousands.   Scattered throughout the costumed crowd are dozens of decoy Alan Starrs--innocent participants taking part in a real Alan Starr Look-Alike contest.

Eventually, Alan Starr breaks into the Access Television Station and pulls out old episodes of 45701 to search for clues in an effort to figure out who actually did kidnap Connee.

In this scene, Alan inserts into the videotape machine the tape for Episode 15 (the episode viewers are actually watching) and quickly winds through scenes they have just seen (including Alan breaking into Access and putting the tape into the machine).  He then fast-forwards the tape "into the future" to find out how the episode is going to come out in the end.

In the end, it does all work out.  From an underground tomb Alan rescues Connee; then Connee rescues Alan.  Alan clears his name, claims the reward for sending Charlie to prison, gives up smoking, begins recycling, buys the '701 Club,' promotes everybody, discovers that Ditch is one of his long-lost illegitimate children, and sends Connee away on a much-deserved vacation to Chillicothe.
