ELISE MITCHELL SANFORD
She holds MFA(1990) and BFA(1988) degrees in photography from Ohio University,
and a BA in journalism from Tulane University, with graduate work at Iowa
State University in television and technical journalism. She has been a
visiting instructor in Photography at Ohio University.
Her awards include a Regional Area Projects Grant, in 1995; a National Endowment
for the Arts Regional Visual Arts/Arts Midwest Fellowship in 1991-92 and
an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist's Fellowship in 1991-92.
Ms. Sanford has enjoyed artist's residencies at Light Work in Syracuse,
New York, at The Headlands Center for the Arts outside San Francisco and
at The Ragdale Foundation, Lake Forest, Illinois.
She has spoken on the topic of women, aging and art at many places: most
recently, at the YWCA in Cincinnati where she was a visiting artist with
an exhibition, The Strength of Women Aging, at the Women's Art Gallery
which ran until April 19, 1996. She was also a panel speaker on Women
and Aging at the Fourth Women in Photography Conference in Houston (1994)
and as a visiting artist at the Houston Center for Photography (1992), and
at SPACES in Cleveland, OH (1993).
Ms. Sanford has more than sixty exhibitions to her credit and her work is
in many private collections.
She has been invited next September to exhibit with photographer William
Wegman at this year's PHOTOKINA in Cologne, Germany. Plans are in progress
for this exhibition.
