Covering a wide area of southeastern Ohio, and portions of West Virginia and Kentucky, our FM network broadcasts 24 hours per day with a schedule of National Public Radio News and music. Weekends are filled with some special programs, including some unique music programs hosted by area volunteers.
Public radio at Ohio University has a long history. Broadcasting began in 1942, when the School of Dramatic Arts and Speech started operating a "wired-wireless" station on the Athens campus. In 1949 WOUI-FM (precursor to WOUB-FM) signed on the air as the first FM station on any Ohio campus and the third in the nation. WOUB-AM took to the airwaves in 1957.
The university's participation in public radio broadcasting has been distinguished by a commitment to public service, local productions intended for listeners in the stations' service areas and an opportunity for university students to be involved as on-air announcers, news reporters and in behind-the-scenes operation.
In 1969 WOUB-FM expanded to a regional station by broadcasting at 50,000 watts. Both WOUB AM and FM joined the new National Public Radio network as founding members in 1970. In 1987 the FM service expanded again, this time to new service areas with transmitters in Cambridge (WOUC-FM) and Ironton (WOUL-FM). In 1992 WOUH-FM, licensed to Chillicothe, went on the air, bringing to four the number of transmitters beaming FM network programming throughout the region. In October, 1993, WOUZ-FM began operation in the Zanesville area, completing the regional network.
