Public Television Ohio University Public Television began operating over 30 years ago and now reaches 36 counties in southeast Ohio and western West Virginia from transmitters in Athens and Cambridge, and translators in Millersburg and Loudenville. We provide 5,534 hours of educational and entertainment programming each year, enhancing the quality of life for viewers throughout our service area. Our programming schedule is carried via cable to 367 communities in these counties. In addition, the WOUB/WOUC stations are interconnected with other Ohio public television stations through the eTech/Ohio's two-way statewide fiber-optic network. About 1,196 hours of pre-school, daytime and after-school programming provide children in classrooms and at home with entertaining educational programming covering a variety of topics, including reading, math, geography and science. The daytime programs serve over 145,000 children each week in K-12 classrooms in 18 counties. The weekend and evening schedules consist of a wide variety of national, regional and locally produced programs from sources that include PBS, APS, CEN, the BBC and the Center's own production units. The programs range from "how-to" programs (e.g. quilting, gardening, home improvement), to language instruction, science and technology, news and public affairs, and music. These programs are seen, on average, by over 172,000 persons each week. Ongoing local productions, such as Newswatch, the nightly news program, are supplemented by a variety of locally produced cultural, documentary and performance specials. These stations address the WOUB Center for Public Media's mission to broaden perspectives and enrich awareness of members of the University and extended community.
